EXCERPTS

from The Secret of Things

Dominica was a place of secrets. Whatever happened in the home, stayed in the home. Period. It didn’t matter what it was—rapes, beatings, or neglect. You could not talk to anybody about it because if you did, you were betraying the family’s name. You were putting the family’s business out there to be ridiculed. That rule was ingrained in you from the time you were a very small child.

I sat on the bed crying, “Don’t go, Teddy. Don’t go, honey. Don’t leave me. Don’t go. You promised me that you were not going to be number three.” I could not believe that God was really letting this happen.

Then it occurred to me that Teddy had orchestrated this moment. He wanted to transition his way, which is why he had insisted that respiratory was not in the room. He knew if he went into cardiac arrest and there was nobody there to save him, they would honor the do not resuscitate order.
