As a Caribbean woman, and as a brown-skinned girl growing up in the islands, I learned early how to fight for my place. That was nothing new to me. In corporate America, I had to work four and five times harder than my male counterparts. I had to fight for opportunities that were handed to them without question. I was labeled aggressive when I was simply assertive. I was called difficult when I was standing firm. Yet I always delivered. No matter how challenging the assignment or how it was presented to me, I got the job done. The teams I led got the job done. Without excuses. Without extra help. That is discipline. That is leadership. That is Caribbean resilience. Growing up brown-skinned in the Caribbean prepared me for rooms that would try to shrink me. I refused to shrink.
